Why Stay in Homer, Alaska?
Here's why!

Visiting Alaska means more than just finding a room and leaving the next day! That is why so many of our Halcyon Heights' guests stay three, four, and more nights. (How Long Should I Stay?)

Here, in beautiful Homer, Alaska, exists the cream of Alaska...scenery that will make your heart flutter, outdoor activities including fishing, bear viewing, educational excursions, hiking, sled dog rides, kayaking, Culinary Tour packages, and more! Through the services of Alaska Private Lodging, we can book many of these activities for you!

National Geographic Adventure magazine (September 2007) lists Homer as the "top adventure town" in Alaska!

What Can We Do in

Known as the "banana belt" of Alaska, Homer has a mild seaside climate.
(Check Homer's weather.)

Homer's great landmark is the Homer Spit extending 4 miles into the beautiful Katchemak Bay. But you'll also want to take a drive down East End Road to see the various views of the bay and the mountains across the Bay. Along the way, you'll will find wine tasting, horseback riding and more. Just minutes from Halcyon Heights, you can take a drive along Skyline Drive to see the views from above, stopping to take a walk through the Carl Wynn Nature Center.

Visit the Pratt Museum, the Alaska Islands and Oceans Visitor Center, and take part in the exciting and educational activities sponsored by the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Homer is the World Gateway to Bear Viewing. You can ask us to schedule a bear viewing trip for you. And see our activity page for even more.

How many days did you plan on staying? You'll need more!

In addition to the outdoors, Homer, Alaska, has beauty within. The most dynamic art community in Alaska is here. See the numerous art galleries throughout Homer depicting native art, photographic art, and the artistry of people throughout Alaska!

Just minutes north of Homer, you'll find a road surrounded by Alaska wilderness. Down that road, you'll find a private art gallery that you'd expect to find in Chicago or any large city. It is the art of world famous Norman Lowell who, together with his wife, Libby, will thrill you with the beauty of Alaska captured on canvas.

Nearby, you'll also discover lesser known artists such as Ben Firth who creates sensitive pencil drawings and other art you'll want to own. And see unique furniture art at Handpainted, artist Dan Coe's studio near downtown Homer.

Alaska is a photographer's paradise! Come prepared! Even before you arrive, why not look at (and purchase!) some actual photographs or note cards of the Homer area and the Kenai Peninsula from Bill Scott's Odyssey Images or from many other of the local photographers.

(Below you'll find our links to some of the places just mentioned.)

Another reason you'll find it essential to have an extended stay in Homer is to sample the food. Homer is proud of the fine eating common in many of its restaurants. (Tips for ordering.) More than just fine, many of Homer's eateries boast world-class food. Your hosts at Halcyon Heights will be sure to recommend the best to you.

Beyond all this, are the proud and friendly people of Homer themselves. Ask any of them how they like being in Homer. They will always correct you. Because no one can merely "like" Homer. They love Homer...as will you!

People continue to move to Homer - and retire in Homer! You can experience all this and more during your stay at Halcyon Heights Bed & Breakfast/Inn!
